I've heard a lot of moms mention in passing that leaking is just a part of being a mom or my birth ruined my bladder.
While pregnancy, labor and delivery (both vaginal and caesarian) is lifechanging in many ways, incontinence shouldn't be an expected part of being a mom.
It doesn't matter how long ago you delivered or how long you have been dealing with incontinence, it is fixable.
Not all incontinence is the same and the answer isn't always those Kegals you've heard about.
Peeing when we run, laugh, lift or cough is called stress incontinence.
One factor in stress incontinence is how we handle extra force on our pelvic floor with movement and activity. One way to help our pelvic floor during lifting is to breath out as we lift.
Try taking a few relaxed breaths in and out. Our belly should slightly come out as we breath in and slightly come in as we breath out. If this is making sense, try a few squats with breathing out as you stand to get the hang of it. If you're feeling good, you can add that weight in the gym, wild child or groceries while you breath. Not getting the hang of it? Pelvic physical therapy can help.
There are many other factors that go into incontinence but breathing is a great place to start. If you have any questions about breathing and lifting, incontinence, leakage or anything else pelvic floor related, I'm here to help.
If you have any advice about those crazy there year olds, I'm all ears!
